Nothing but bass?

Devialet Dione sound bar review

Meghan Trainor said it best: all 'bout that bass, 'bout that bass…. - if that sounds like YOU, then I may have found the soundbar for you bassheads out there. Today we’re reviewing the brand new Devialet Dione.

DEVIALET DIONE SOUNDBAR SPECS

The Dione is an all-in-one, 5.1.2 channel Dolby Atmos soundbar from Devialet. It features seventeen total drivers –eight of which are aluminum long-throw woofers that along with the bar’s 950 Watts of total amplification give it a reported frequency response of 24Hz to 21kHz with a maximum volume output of over 100 decibels. In layman’s terms, the Dione is a full-range soundbar, as in no surrounds or subwoofers required, that is capable of near movie theater like levels of volume.

The Dione is controlled through its own mobile app, which gives you access to the Dione’s three sound profiles as well as Devialet’s auto room correction - more on these in just a minute - just know there is no remote. The Dione also has built-in dual-band WiFi as well as Bluetooth 5.0 and Apple AirPlay 2. It supports Universal Plug-n-Play streaming as well as Spotify Connect. In terms of physical connection options, the Dione is pretty limited - especially considering its premium price tag. You will only find three; an HDMI 2.1 port with eARC support, an optical audio input and an Ethernet port making it less competitive against less expensive sound bars currently on the market.

THE DIONE DESIGN

In terms of design, the Dione is striking. It arrives in very nice packaging (better than most), after all, Devialet doesn’t mess about when it comes to build quality and design. The Dione is no exception. While looks are always subjective, I think the Dione is a breath of fresh air and a standout in a sea of nondescript black bars that make up the majority of today’s soundbar market. On a table or mounted to a wall using the included mount, the Dione looks high-end and the auto-rotating center speaker is especially cool –rotating to face the listener whether table or wall mounted.

HOW DOES THE DEVIALET DIONE SOUND?

So how does the Dione Dione sound? Let’s just get right to it. How much do you like bass? Because if the answer is, a LOT, then you should stop reading, smash the link Kristi left for you, and get yourself a Dione and never watch the second half of this video…because as Jeff Goldblume said in Jurassic Park, “just because you can (do something), doesn’t mean you should”.

We tested the Dione in two different environments, our main listening space and our primary bedroom. Our main room is large, and if you’ve been following along you know that we’ve gone to great lengths to make the room as neutral as possible with respect to its influence upon whatever product we’re evaluating in it. Our primary bedroom is NOT a treated space, and is (likely) more in-line with most bedrooms and living rooms, as it is on the larger side. After listening to a few demos in both rooms, I turned to Kristi and said, I bet this speaker’s response will look like a slide; hot in the bass and going straight down from there!
