I don’t think it’s up for debate that either now, or eventually, LED-backlit LCD TVs are going to rule the day. While OLED is nice -arguably better than LED LCD TVs - it does have its limitations. OLED isn’t always cost effective, it isn’t always easy to produce in larger sizes, it’s not as bright, and questions about its longevity continue to plague it. While early LED-backed LCD TVs couldn’t hold a candle to OLED, advancements in technology have more than shrunk the gap, and Mini-LED QLED displays like TCL’s 6 and 8 Series may represent another nail in OLED’s coffin. The 6 Series from TCL is not the brand’s flagship Mini-LED display, that honor falls to their 8 Series. The 6 Series is TCL’s entry point into Mini-LED territory. The 6 Series comes in three sizes, 55, 65 and 75 inches -we’re reviewing the 55 inch today. All three sizes have largely the same specifications save for one element, number of total backlighting zones. The 55 inch is limited to a reported 128 backlighting zones whereas the larger 65 and 75 inch models have 240 zones.

TCL 6 Series Mini LED BUILD QUALITY

For an entry-level Mini-LED TV the 6 Series looks far more competent design-wise than a lot of the competition. The TCL 6 Series Mini LED build quality with it’s near bezel-less edge gives it a decidedly OLED like appearance around three of its four sides. While not as thin as an OLED when viewed in profile, the back panel is more than a little reminiscent of Sony’s MASTER SERIES OLED display I reviewed last year. Honestly, I was not expecting this level of design OR build quality from TCL.

Setting up the 6 Series is easy thanks to its Roku interface. If you’re a fan of Roku you will no doubt feel at home with the 6 Series. If you’re NOT a fan of Roku, well, there are workarounds.

HOW TO GET THE BEST PICTURE OUT OF TCL MINI LED TV

Out of the box the 6 Series ships in an eco-friendly picture profile which I don’t have to tell you is terrible. However, unlike MOST displays on the market, placing it into its Cinema profile will not improve things. The picture profile you’re going to want to choose is Normal. Out of the box Normal has a decidedly Blue bias to its greyscale and the colors are way too saturated and biased towards red. However, changing the color temperature setting to warm improves things dramatically.
